Sek Yee & 'Boss' Play Hosts to Paul Chong

Paul Chong arrived from Perth on Wednesday 13th April to attend the funeral of his younger sister who passed away on Saturday 9th April. Paul has been busy with his siblings, numerous nephews and neices for the past two days and it was only today we managed to have breakfast together. Hau Kiang took time off to take Paul to melepak lepak in KL and survey the terrain. Paul is currently our guest in Subang Jaya.

Mr. Chang Chee Teck on "Why Should We Care" .....April 10th, 2011

Our first in a proposed series of health talks was held on Sunday 10th April at the Royal Lake Club. Attendance was rather poor despite several reminders. There were only seven Andersonians and four invited guests. Looks like health prevention always takes a back seat until one is confronted with a health challenge.

Nevertheless, despite the small group, our speaker Mr Chang Chee Teck delivered his talk very passionately by sending a strong message that we must change our lifestyle, eat well, exercise well, learn to de-stress, etc to prevent the onset of major chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disorders and cancers, etc.

Mr Chang, an advanced kidney cancer patient with metastasis to the lungs (there are 47 lesions on both lungs), shared with the group how he has survived about 19 months so far using a nutritional healing system called the Gerson Therapy. When Chang was diagnosed in Sept 2009, doctors did not expect him to survive more than six months with or without conventional medical intervention. However, he is very well today.

If you would like to find out more about the Gerson Therapy, just do an internet search. Alternatively, visit Chang's blogspot.....www.upekah.blogspot.com.......there are a lot of useful articles/information there.

Annual Speech & Prize Giving Day on April 9, 2011

On Saturday 9th April 2011, I had the opportunity and privilege to be invited for the Anderson School's annual Hari Anugerah Kecemerlangan (in our days,it was called the Speech and Prize Giving Day in conjunction with Sports Day). This was due to the good rapport and influence of our Ipoh agent, Pretam Singh who helped finalised the Economics book prize with the Pengetua of ASI recently (see our previous story).

Going back to ASI to attend the function after 45 years was really nostalgic for me. I remember attending every single sports, speech and prize giving day from Std 1 to Form 6. Standing under the school porch that morning brought back memories of being together with my other Prefect friends in 1966/67 waiting for the Guest of Honour to arrive. This time around, I was there with Pretam to await the arrival of DSS and his wife who was accorded a special parking space near the porch (also arranged by Pretam!)
The function started with speeches by the Yang Di-Pertua PIBG, the Pengetua and the Pengarah Pelajaran Negeri Perak, Encik Mohd Rauhi bin Mohd Isa. This was followed with presentation of prizes to outstanding students in Forms 1,2,and 4 and special book prizes for PMR (Form 3), SPM (Form 5) and STPM (Form 6).

The first recipient for the inaugaral "Book Prize for Economics in honour of Dato Seri Selvamany and sponsored by students of 1966/67 Form Six Arts" is a pretty lass (from Kg Simee?)...Ms Curly Lee Kar Yee who scored the best results in Economics in Upper Six. Ms Curly has already started work with a pharmacy outlet nearby and she rushed over from her work place to meet up with DSS and us (see photos attached).
After the prize giving ended, we were invited to the VIP room for lunch with the Pengetua. Later Pretam and I reiterated to the Pengetua, Tuan Guffri that we shall continue with the Economics Book Prize for the next 10 years or more and perhaps we could work together on other activities. We also told the Pengetua that we shall bring a bigger delegation of 66/67 students next year and he welcomed the idea of more past students attending the Hari Anugerah and other activities of the ASI.

We "bidded" farewell to each other at about 12.10 pm.

Finalising the Economics Book Prize 2011....on March 24, 2011

On 24th March 2011, Pretam, Hah Chye and I made a trip back to Anderson School to meet up with the Pengetua, Tuan Mohamad Guffri and his Senior Asst, Tuan Haji Tauhid to finalise arrangements for the Economics Book prize to be awarded to the best Upper 6 student for Economics in honour of DSS. With the groundwork already laid by Pretam Singh and the fact that Hah Chye also knows Encik Tauhid well, my task was made easier and discussions with them was over in a matter of 15 minutes after which we adjourned for lunch at the Old Andersonians clubhouse.

"Is it a bird, a plane or..........???"
"Handing over our cheque for RM20........."

"A Class Photo to Remind the School"

"Now, this is all the money that we have in our kitty!"

Our Tai-Kor in Ipoh says don't worry, be happy, as long as I am here!

Our Tai-Kor and Secret Agent in Ipoh
I handed over a letter assuring the Pengetua that we have made provisions to sponsor the Economics Book Prize for the next 10 years. A cheque for RM 200 was handed over to the Pengetua together with the laminated photos of both the Upper Six Arts 1 and 2.

The next speech and prize giving day will be held on April 9th at 3.00 pm. After lunch, I went over to visit and brief DSS on the various arrangements made so far. He is very appreciative and he has asked me to thank each and everyone of his children.

An Afternoon Matinee with Shafiq & Lat.....on April 3, 2011

On Sunday, 3rd April, we (Hau Kiang, Kat and I) went to see the 3 p.m. matinee show of Lat Kampong Boy the Musical the Istana Budaya, KL. It was indeed a very enjoyable show and the production and choreography was really superb in depicting the various scenes of Malaysian life in Ipoh and KL.

When we visited Mohd Shafiq on March 17th….he told us that he was looking forwarding to meeting Dato’ Lat the next week as his aunty Roslini had bought tickets for him, his mum and sister to see the evening show. However Roslini later informed Kat that they did not make it to the show because Shafiq was very ill that day and was practically writhing in pain. As at that point we have not purchased tickets for ourselves, we decided to sponsor the tickets for three of them (Shafiq, sister and mother) for the Sunday matinee. Fortunately by that time he was already out of his pain zone and he has been off the morphine patch for the past four days. He was his usual cheeky self when he arrived and had the opportunity to pose for pictures with Lat’s cartoon characters on exhibition at the foyer, before going into the theatre. Coincidentally HH the Sultan of Selangor came to see the matinee show and Shafiq had the honour to sit in the same row as the royal guest.

Needless to say Shafiq enjoyed the show thoroughly and to top it all, he was later taken to meet Dato’ Lat himself. Kat had emailed Dato’ Lat earlier on to inform him of our Project Shafiq and he obliged by spending quite a lot of time talking to Shafiq, signing his autograph, drawing a cartoon and posing for photographs with him. Awie, who played Lat, spoke to him and Shafiq sang to him a few lines from the title song “Kampong Boy”. The rest of the cast, ensemble as well the crew came around to talk to him. There was Atilia (as Faezah @ Mrs Lat), Sandra Sodhy (as Mrs Hew, the fierce English teacher), Daniel (as the young Lat), and many others whose faces are familiar to him as they frequently appear on TV. Shafiq was also introduced to Harith Iskandar (one of theDirectors) who signed his book. He told Harith that he was once bald too, like him and Harith replied that “at least your hair can grow back, mine can’t”. The real Mrs Hew who was teaching in Sekolah Menengah Rendah Pasir Puteh, was also a guest of honour. She confirmed that she had a bee-hive hairdo in those days but was not able to tease her hair up for the show, probably, she mused, because there is not enough hair for that anymore.

After having a great time at Istana Budaya, we finally said goodbye to each other at about 7.00pm
