Let's Sing Along With Shafiq!

On 11th May,Shafiq's mother told Kat that doctors in HKL suggested that Shafiq's right leg and right arm be amputated as well in order to save his life. She was really devastated. So on Sunday 15th, we decided to visit him in Serendah. When we arrived, he was not in severe pain as he had taken some morphine in the morning. The swelling in the right shoulder and right ankle is noticeably bigger. His right leg is bent at an angle and cannot be straightened at all.

We brought him some food and some DVDs (Tom and Jerry, Mr Bean,etc)....the DVDs worked wonders. His Internet connection is already working and he said he has seen all our blog postings. He has marked "Andersonians 66/67" under his Favourites.....he even instructed me how to access our blogspot.

Trying Out Sabah Snake Grass
While scrolling the blogspot with him, he noticed Uncle Tan playing golf (of course he does not know who Greg Norman is).....and he asked me " mana itu Uncle India" (alluding to Uncle Merlyn). When he saw the posting of our first historic karaoke, he commented...."saya pun mahu nyanyi". Shall we arrange a special karaoke session with him? Let us try to share some joy with him as we enjoy ourselves. Watch out for further news.

Before leaving, Kat gave him an ang pow for RM 200 (from the ASI charity fund) and another RM 50 from a friend. We also deposited RM 550 contributed by the qigong group of RA SS 19/1 of Subang Jaya. They definitely need more help than this. If you would like to make additional contributions, please send to our fund administrator, Merlyn Kasimir.

Paul Meets Cikgu Mohd. Nadzar in SS2

On Monday 9th May, we took Paul to meet up with another old teacher (only 83 years old)...Cikgu Mohd Nadzar who taught Bahasa Kebangsaan in Anderson School in the early 1960's. Paul remembered him well especially in the teachers' staff room activities. Andersonians who have gone through secondary school years in ASI (such as exemplary students like me, Sor Hwa, Sarkawi, WAK, CFL, Poek, WPL, etc) would remember Cikgu Nadzar as a very interesting teacher with lots of stories to share.Today, he is still the same. During the 2 hours we spent with him, he told us (Paul, Kat, Sor Hwa, Sarkawi, Tarmezi and me) stories like how he learned the English language, the naughty students, the current education environment, etc.

Later we adjourned to the famous Kayu Restaurant in SS2 for lunch and further story listening. Hau Kiang and daughter, Irene joined us there. When I told Cikgu Nadzar about Sarkawi's karaoke singing skills, he immediately told us to include him in our next karaoke session. He will sing all the P Ramlee songs or songs of the 1950's (and he keep saying he is only 38 years old saja). Apparently he was a member of a band before during his hey days.

The next karaoke session will certainly be an interesting event. Don't miss it.

Early Birthday Celebrations with Paul

On Saturday night 7th May, Hau Kiang and family invited Paul and us for a formal dinner at the Orchid Room of the Royal Lake Club, KL. Merlyn and Assunta were there as well. After dinner, we had the opportunity to witness the ballroom dancing which started at about 10.15 pm.

Our very versatile host, Hau Kiang (who has already demonstrated his skills at karaoke, golf and line dancing) showed us what ballroom dancing is about together with his wife, Pek Hooi and daughter Irene. We also had a first hand view of the infamous poco-poco dance and a few others.

Suddenly, at about 11.30 pm, a birthday cake was rolled out to the surprise of Paul Chong. After cutting the cake, Paul kept asking "whose idea was it?".....nobody owns up, so Paul will never know the answer. Neeta and husband, who were dining at the restaurant that night, came over and joined in the celebration. Paul's birthday is on 21st May......born 73 years ago.

Many thanks Hau Kiang and Pek Hooi (and Irene too) for the dinner.
