Annual Speech & Prize Giving Day at Anderson School in 2012

The Hari Anugerah Cemerlang (formerly known as Speech and Prize giving day) 2012 of Anderson School was held on Saturday 28th April. This year, Tan Sri Nuraizah (Chairman, DSS Biography Project), Dato’ Salleh Yeop (our emcee), Datuk Merlyn Kasimir and Caroline Wong and hubby Ean Keong (from the 1967/68 batch) took time off to attend the function together with our evergreen Dato’ Seri Selvamany.

After the speeches were delivered, the PIBG chairman presented book prizes to the lower secondary students while Caroline Wong presented prizes to winners of the PMR section. Our Dato’ Salleh gave away the book prizes in the SPM category whilst Tan Sri Nuraizah presented prizes to the winners in the STPM category.

The winner of this year’s Economics Book Prize (sponsored by 1966/67 Form Six Arts in honour of Dato’ Seri Selvamany) is a pleasant lad, Low Choon Wei (from Kg Simee?) who also received a Book Prize from (and sponsored by) Tan Sri Nuraizah. Hence the joint presentation by DSS and Tan Sri Nuraizah. They also presented prizes to the best student in STPM which was awarded to Lee En Sheng, a science student.

This year, ASI received book prize contributions from several proud Andersonians like Tan Sri Nuraizah, Puan Sri Raja Noora Ashikin, Dato’ Salleh Yeop, Khaw Siok Chye, Ho Fook Seng, Dr Rokiah Talib, Caroline Wong and myself. A special thanks to all them. In addition, all the recipients in the SPM and STPM categories received a copy of the recently launched biography, “Selvamany: More Than a Teacher.”

After the prize presentation was over, a lot of students and their parents who were inspired by the presence of the prominent ex-Andersonians, mingled with them and had photos taken as well. We hope to make a bigger impact next year.

Before we left the school hall for refreshments, Uncle Selvamany obliged some students who have received the biography, with a personal signature on the book. After refreshments, the group took a short walk to the school library and had some fruitful discussions with the Pengetua,Tuan Guffri and some of the other staff members on how ex-students can contribute to the school. We hope some of the points discussed will be implemented.

We said farewell to the School at about 12.30 pm. We hope more former Andersonians will join us at next year’s event.

An Anniversary 'Tahlil' Session in Memory of Jauharah

On Sat 24th March, Jauharah's daughters and son hosted an anniversary tahlil session in memory of their mother followed by a BBQ party session at the special kampung house which Jau started building when we had our Food and Fun (and computer) workshop at her residence on Aug 5th 2010. After she passed on a year ago, the children pledged to complete the kampung house just as Jau wanted it....to host relatives and friends who wants to experience kampung living in an urban surrounding.

Our WAK went early and attended the tahlil session.Me and Kat joined the BBG party later followed by Hau Kiang and Pek Hooi. We were the last guests to leave (so that we could view the kampung house at night). The picture speaks for itself.

Incidentally, Jau's youngest girl will be getting married in Aug this year and she intends to hold all the wedding events at this special house..with the wedding reception in the evening.I am sure Jau will be happy.

More news on the wedding later.

Ng Yook Woon Leads Reunion Birthday Celebrations on March 16, 2012

On Friday 16th March, Mr Ng Yook Woon , another true–blue Andersonian (from 1948 to 1957) organised a reunion of his batch of 1955/1956 and 1956/57 Form 6 students to celebrate DSS’s 86th birthday belatedly. With the biography launch and the subsequent busy schedule of DSS and some other members of the group, they only managed to come together about 2 months later. About 30 former students, including Dato’ Seri Chan Sek Keong (Chief Justice of Singapore) and his wife, Datin Seri Elisabeth Chan, gathered at The Indulgence, Ipoh for a very eventful evening of togetherness with their Master and with each other. Kat and I was the youngest couple there. It was certainly an eye opener for us to witness a gathering of former students of ASI (the 7 series group).

After the birthday cake was cut by DSS and DSP, the 7 series grouping attempted to sing the Anderson School song. Ng Yook Woon had to provide the leads…..obviously, many of them has forgotten the lyrics….perhaps the only person who could sing without interruption was our DSS.
