3 Golf Majors in One Day....April 27, 2011

Our golf game with Paul Chong on Wednesday 27th April at the Kelab Golf Seri Selangor (also known as Kelab Golf Sini Sana) has several significant "firsts" to our lives. Firstly, this is Paul's first golf game in Malaysia and also his first game with his 2 exemplary students (one from A1 and one from A2) and this is also my first golf outing with the Greg Norman of Malaysia (see the photos for the clue).

Despite the wet ground (due to the heavy rains on Tuesday night), we completed the 9 holes in just over 2 hours with Paul, 73 walking the nine holes most of the time. He was stronger than we thought. The weather was perfect that morning (we prayed very hard for it). After we rested enough, we adjourned for some Ipoh "yong tow foo"...courtesy the Greg Norman of Malaysia.
Golfing or dancing?? The Wrong Way to Tee Off!

Now, bend down!!

Now, bend down again!!

NB: Quiz competition....look at Paul's golf shoes closely. This is another significant "first". Do you see anything special? Enlarge the photo and have a closer look.......A very special prize awaits the winner.

Poh Lam Takes on Paul in Taiping & Penang

I'm sure most of you would have heard people tell you off when you say you're busy. They'll remind you that, hey, you're a pensioner, how can you be busy!?

Well, you can judge for yourself from my continuation of the saga left off by Hah Chye.

After lunch at the New Club in Taiping, I drove Paul up to Seberang Jaya (mainland Penang to those of you who didn't pay attention during Paul's Geography lessons) to see his cousin in the 'fishy' neighbourhood of Taman Siakap - must have been some unimaginative civil servant who decided to name all the roads in this vicinity after fish - Kurau and Tenggiri are nearby, in case you want to know.

This is how you volley!

Oops! Where's the Ball?

And this is NOT how you volley!

Anyway, after paying our respects to Mr Yeoh (Paul's cousin), I dragged him along across the Penang Bridge to Penang Sports Club for a cool refreshing drink (that was my excuse, anyway), then left him in the library to read (and perchance to nap and dream) while I fulfilled my obligation to play tennis with, inter alia, an 81-year old expatriate from USA. Then we had a chat (correction, Paul had a chat with my playing partners, I was too busy downing a couple of frothies).

Then we had a cozy dinner in the club restaurant before I had to drag him home with me (back across the bridge) to meet the Boss before her bedtime!

Tomorrow I've strict instructions from his sisters to return him safely to Taiping. As soon as my head clears from the beer and wine, I'll figure out where to take him for breakfast...

Regards,

pohlam

Paul's Day 3 in Ipoh.....April 20th., 2011

I have just got back to Ipoh after having had lunch with Paul, his two sisters and Poh Lam at New Club, Taiping. By now, Paul should be on the way to Seberang Prai with Poh Lam to visit another relative.

This morning I took Paul to Dato' Seri Selvamany's house where they had a long chat. More photos, reminiscences, etc. Then it was off to the home of another of Paul's relatives in Taman Wing Onn, just off Jalan Kangsar, Ipoh. After that it was an easy drive on the NSE to Taiping. Poh Lam was already there at the Club.

Paul's sisters bought us a sumptuous lunch. I had the most rice. Poh Lam had all the fish heads from the curry.

Paul's Day 2 in Ipoh........April 19, 2011

Being sadly lacking in imagination, all I have mostly done today (Tuesday) was to take him round to eateries and other palaces of gluttony. (Last night we gorged on crunchy Buntong bean sprouts with steamed chicken and Ipoh koay teow. Then it was back to the house for some conversation and green tea to wash away the chicken fat. About 10 pm, I dropped Paul off at the Ipoh City and Country Club - where he was entertained by old friends from Lions Club until I don't know what hour).

Breakfast today was chee cheong fun with dried prawns and chilli sauce, and Hailam steamed pulut rice with sweet red kaya, washed down with local black coffee - not the souless stuff masquerading as Old Town White Coffee (yuck) fit only for ignorant tourists and Starbucks kids. He turned down an offer to order meehoon mee with dry chicken curry, the best in town.

I took him over to my office to get access to the Internet. Looks like he had a lot of mail - he was at the keyboard for about an hour. Of course, we never missed the opportunity to take lots of pictures.

Then, about lunch time, over to the friendly old man and his daughter beneath a tree at Jalan Canning Estate for raja musang and udang merah. There were none, so we had to settle for D24 and No. 88 - opened for us while we ate happily by the roadside. More photos were taken. We drank water from empty durian rinds for the guaranteed cooling effect. Would have been better with some salt.

Then I took Paul back to the house to play some CDs - Perry Como, Al Martino, Eddy Arnold, Johnny Nash, Dinah Washington, Patti Page, Roy Orbison, etc. He sang along in his best baritone: he could be karaoke king of Western Australia without really trying. My neighbours had no idea. I closed all doors and windows to spare them. The wife was safely on the way with my No. 1 son to KL this morning.

Come afternoon we watched a movie about "The Man Who Sued God". It's an Australian film about a man who sued the church because his insurance company wouldn't pay for his losses fron an act of God - which, surprisingly, Paul has never heard of or seen. Maybe we are not so ulu in Ipoh after all.

Tonight we had a 5-star home cooked meal at Pretam's house. There was another guest - Dato Anwar Hassan, President of the Old Andersonians' Club. After that more photos and a yak-yak session.

It's midnight. I am home to report that all's well. Paul's back in his room at Ipoh Swimming Club. Tomorrow morning, I shall take him meet DSS, then drive him to Taiping to meet up with Poh Lam for lunch, leaving Paul in the safe hands of his dear sister.

Best regards,

Paul's First Day in Ipoh........on April 18th., 2011

At the railway station we had a photo shoot of the Ipoh tree, the station building and the old Town Hall building across the road. Then we drove up Brewster Road, down Hugh Low Street into Belfied Street. We got out at Ipoh padang for a walkabout. He took shots of SMI and Ipoh Club.

After that it was to the Old Andersonians Club for teh tarik while waiting for Pretam to turn up for lunch. He did at 12.45 pm. We went over first to Anderson School, said hello to the Pengetua and his senior assistant. Then we walked about the first floor and ground floor, and out into the padang for another photo shoot. We got hold of some school boys to take the pictures. After that back to the Club house for banana leaf lunch. Paul had an amazing appetitte. It must have been all that exercise !

Then we drove down Tiger Lane to Kampar Road. We found Paul's old house in Mansion Park where he lived for a number of years before he moved to KL. Plenty of nostalgia for him.

His mind is crystal clear. Good hearing. Only that he has restricted peripheral vision in both eyes but it can't be that bad - he says he still plays golf in Perth.
