On Friday 16th March, Mr Ng Yook Woon , another true–blue Andersonian (from 1948 to 1957) organised a reunion of his batch of 1955/1956 and 1956/57 Form 6 students to celebrate DSS’s 86th birthday belatedly. With the biography launch and the subsequent busy schedule of DSS and some other members of the group, they only managed to come together about 2 months later. About 30 former students, including Dato’ Seri Chan Sek Keong (Chief Justice of Singapore) and his wife, Datin Seri Elisabeth Chan, gathered at The Indulgence, Ipoh for a very eventful evening of togetherness with their Master and with each other. Kat and I was the youngest couple there. It was certainly an eye opener for us to witness a gathering of former students of ASI (the 7 series group).
After the birthday cake was cut by DSS and DSP, the 7 series grouping attempted to sing the Anderson School song. Ng Yook Woon had to provide the leads…..obviously, many of them has forgotten the lyrics….perhaps the only person who could sing without interruption was our DSS.

Be Sure To Visit Stall 21 for 'free' Pomeloes!
On the way home after visiting Cikgu Abdul Rahim in Gunung Rapat, DSS and I stopped by Panjang's stall no 21 near the Sam Poh Tong to buy some pomeloes. After the pomeloes were selected, there was chaos in the stall as DSS insisted on paying and Panjang's son refused to accept payment. Me and Kat just took the pomeloes and sat in the car and waited....we still do not what the compromise was.
Earlier, Panjang's son told me that he had cleared one side of his small stall and intend to frame and display the biography after everyone in his family has read the book. What a gesture!

From One Master To Another....Cikgu Abdul Rahim Hakim
After the biography was launched, DSS has been wanting to visit and present a copy of the book to Cikgu Abdul Rahim Hakim, a much respected senior teacher of ASI and later Sekolah Menengah Idris Shah,Gopeng. When Sekolah Lawan Kuda was set up, Cikgu Rahim was chosen to be the first Principal (see pages 130-131 of the biography). So we decided to go on Friday, 16 March in the late morning.
When we arrived, Cikgu Rahim was dressed and awaiting transport to go for Friday prayers at the mosque nearby. The 2 old friends called each other "master"......that is the measure of their respect for each other and when they hugged each other, their eyes were teary. Cikgu Rahim kept telling me and Khadijah that DSS is definitely "more than a teacher"....he repeated this phrase several times even before seeing the title of the book.
Despite some severe health challenges,Cikgu Rahim was very friendly and cheerful and believe me, he is surrounded with 2 laptops and a printer.....so I nudged our DSS that is still not too late to be computer savy.....let us pray.

Anderson School's PIBG Annual Fund Raiser on March 3, 2012
On Sat 3rd March,I attended Anderson School's PIBG annual fund raising dinner " Majlis Malam Seribu Impian" together with my 2 nephews...Mikhail Sulaiman (Form 5) and Raphail Sulaiman (Form 2). It was an opportunity for me to meet up with the Pengetua and the 2 Penolong Kanan and other teachers and old boys as well. DSS also met some old students like Prof Jameel Basha and Zaira Tak (our Jauhara Tak's elder brother) and some students from the 1954 batch.
The highlight of the evening (after all the speeches) was the karaoke session. Prof Jameel Basha dedicated his first song "My Way" to DSS and then he sang his signature song, "The Green,Green Grass of Home." Following that the guest of honour, DYAM Raja Jaafar sang "The Outsider" followed by "The Ten Guitars" . Both are really superb singers.
The evening ended with the school band playing the ASI school song.....for me the school song played by the band really brings back memories of my secondary school days watching the school band practising/playing during the annual sports and prize giving functions.

Re-Visiting Anderson School Ipoh
On Monday 27th February, me, Merlyn and Pretam met with the Penolong Kanan of Anderson School, Tuan Haji Tauhid to discuss and presented several cheques as our contribution for this year's speech and prize giving day (Hari Anugerah Cemerlang) scheduled for early April (date will depend on when the SPM results are released). Again this year, the group will be sponsoring the annual Book Prize for Economics in honour of Dato' Seri Selvamany. In addition, Dato' Salleh Yeop (our senior) is sponsoring 3 book prizes for English, History and Geography besides my contribution for a book prize for English Literature.
After the meeting, we took a nostalgic walk through the Form Six classrooms area and then proceeded to the Form Five area where I found one of my nephew, Mikhail Sulaiman doing what I did in class 47 years ago.....ie not paying attention in class. I also discovered that another nephew, Raphail Sulaiman ( Mikhail's younger brother) is the school's official "private investigator".....this was told to me by one of his teachers whom I met by chance as I walk along the classrooms.
We later had lunch at the OAC clubhouse joined by Hah Chye.

Special Photo Album & DVDs of Biography Event for Uncle
Over the weekend, I was back in Ipoh to attend the ASI's annual PIBG fund raising dinner together with my 2 nephews. Also, Raja Noora was back in Ipoh for a hockey tournament (no, no she did not play....). After consulting with Tan Sri last week and in view of the fact that Hau Kiang has started to upload segments of video clips of the biography event onto our blogspot, we thought that it would be timely to present the special album and the DVD photos and videos to DSS as the 2 daughters and other relatives has been viewing the blogspot and telling them......and both of them were in "blur" land. Very soon they won't be so blur.
Raja Noora presented the special photo album and the DVDs to DSS. Later we adjourned to the OAC clubhouse for lunch.

A Golf Ball's Insights into Our Daily Lives!
Feb 29th 2012 is a day to remember for the 3 old but still formidable angels. Besides being a leap year, this is the first time we had the opportunity to play golf with Dato Salleh Yeop, our "not so virgin" MC at the recent biography launch of Dato Seri Selvamany's book. We had a good time at the KGPA and certainly hope we do not have to wait for another leap year to golf together again. Playing with Dato Salleh, we gain several valuable insights about golf and our daily life:
a) We must tee-up the golf ball with much tender loving care. We believe he talks to ball also.
b) Next, Salleh warns the fairway to behave i.e. not to shift grounds after he he has hit the ball (so that his ball will be in the middle of the fairway as intended),
c) Then he hits the ball after a short prayer,
d) When on the green and just before putting, Salleh would chant "small ball, big hole" several times. Sometimes it worked, but sometime the hole is just not big enough,
e) Sometimes, he would chip the ball from outside the green straight into the hole (see photo)...sometimes into a bunker,
e) But,alas on the 18th hole, Dato Salleh's ball went into the bunker next to the green and he has to take 4 shots before it came out onto the green.
So the moral of the above story is that, the golf ball, just like the wife at home, may not listen to you all the time despite all forms of persuasions, etc, etc. Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the game very much despite playing like old cows. To Salleh, thanks for all the tips. And to Merlyn, many thanks for hosting us and arranging the beautiful weather as well.
