Re-Visiting Anderson School Ipoh

On Monday 27th February, me, Merlyn and Pretam met with the Penolong Kanan of Anderson School, Tuan Haji Tauhid to discuss and presented several cheques as our contribution for this year's speech and prize giving day (Hari Anugerah Cemerlang) scheduled for early April (date will depend on when the SPM results are released). Again this year, the group will be sponsoring the annual Book Prize for Economics in honour of Dato' Seri Selvamany. In addition, Dato' Salleh Yeop (our senior) is sponsoring 3 book prizes for English, History and Geography besides my contribution for a book prize for English Literature.

After the meeting, we took a nostalgic walk through the Form Six classrooms area and then proceeded to the Form Five area where I found one of my nephew, Mikhail Sulaiman doing what I did in class 47 years ago.....ie not paying attention in class. I also discovered that another nephew, Raphail Sulaiman ( Mikhail's younger brother) is the school's official "private investigator".....this was told to me by one of his teachers whom I met by chance as I walk along the classrooms.

We later had lunch at the OAC clubhouse joined by Hah Chye.

  5. Hi Fellow Andersonians.
Mr Paul Chong message via Yeong Sek Yee
    "
[11/11, 07:41] From Yeong Sek Yee on Mr Paul Chong:
" Thank God I am home. Outwardly, I am fine but in my head is a time bomb all negatively wired up & can explode anytime, anywhere if I am not careful. Unknowingly, I have some 12 or more mini strokes which would not have been detected without the brain scan & further MRI of the brain. I have now become a "pill" man . . . pills of various sizes & colours, apparently for the rest of my natural life. Just got to let go & let God.
    Message from Paul Chong, Perth."

Former students of Dato’ Seri Selvamany (Tokoh Guru Kebangsaan 1996) from
Anderson School Arts 66/67 gathered on Sunday, January 20 to celebrate their
Economics teacher’s 93rd birthday at the Old Andersonian Club and Cafeteria.
While some came in a chartered bus from Kuala Lumpur others drove down from
other states to join in the lunch hosted by the birthday boy himself. Present was his wife,
Poovayee, a former teacher from Ipoh Convent School who is 92 years old. A few of her
former students were among those present that day.
The event was graced by some very senior Andersonians, Selvamany’s former
students themselves, such as Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Tan Sri Nuraizah Hamid, Dr
Selvaratnam and prominent Ipoh lawyer, Ng Yook Woon.
In his speech, Tengku Razaleigh mentioned how the couple had endeared themselves
to their former students. They are welcome to drop in on them whenever they are in
Ipoh. He reiterated that Selvamany is more than a teacher, which was the title of a book
“Selvamany, More Than A Teacher” written by one of his students a few years ago.
In his emotional reply, Selvamany expressed how blessed he was to have attained
93 years of age. It has enabled him to see his students’ progress long after they had left
school. The ex-teacher always expounded the beauty of a multiracial and a multicultural
Malaysia during his teaching days as is evidenced during the gathering.
As he had insisted on a “no-present and no-flowers policy” for his birthday, his
students presented him with an “angpow” which he could donate to his chosen charities.
He duly responded by naming four charities where the money could be distributed – a
mosque, a church, a Buddhist temple and a children’s home.
The ceremony ended with a photo session followed by a tearful send-off for a revered
teacher. His 70-something students looked on with some trepidation, as their 93-year-old
teacher drove his family home in his 38-year-old Volvo. “The car, if it could speak, would
    tell many tales,” Selvamany enjoined.
The sentiment of the crowd is best summed by this excerpt from a birthday card sent
to him. It reads, “You’re my Econs teacher, my hockey coach and advisor to the Students’
Benefit Society in ASI (1966/67). I’ll always remember you as a very caring mentor with
great wisdom and tireless effort, who always inspired his wards to strive for their utmost
best. Most of all I’ll always cherish memories of your undying compassion for the poor
    and the needy”.

    1) By New Straits Times - October 29, 2019 @ 2:05pm
KUALA LUMPUR: Revered educator Datuk Seri N.S. Selvamany died this morning, from what was believed to have been lung failure.

His death was confirmed by Perak Economic Advisory Council chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Annuar Zaini.

    Selvamany was 93.

Originally from Batu Gajah, Selvamany taught economics at SMK Anderson in Ipoh for 20 years.

Later on he became a principal in two schools in Perak.

Many Andersonians, including Annuar, would remember Selvamany with smiles on their faces.

"To you sir, we owe a great debt, you were blessed with three biological children, but you have treated us as your children too.

"To you sir, our very fond memories and love, thank you for taking and treating all of us, your students from various religious and ethnic backgrounds as your children," Annuar said.

Amongs his list of successful students include Gua Musang member of Parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, former chief secretary to the government Tun Ahmad Sarji, former Chief Justice Tun Eusoff Chin and former Singapore Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong.

Selvamany's dedication to educating young minds earned him the national "Tokoh Guru" award in 1997. Prior to that, he received the state "Tokoh Guru" award in 1996.

He was also conferred with an honorary doctorate in Education by Universiti Malaya.

Selvamany once attended school with the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, and in 2012, the latter launched a biography about his former schoolmate, written by Dr Rokiah Talib, a former professor at UM's Anthropology and Sociology department.

Sultan Azlan Shah and Selvamany were students at the Batu Gajah Government English School. The school was later renamed to Sekolah Sultan Yussuf.

The school was founded by Selvamany's grandfather Malaiperumal Pillay in 1907.

    RIP to our Dear Teacher

Remembering a great teacher, the late N.S. Selvamany
    By Faezatul Sabri, Nisa Azaman - October 29, 2019 @ 4:34pm
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri N.S. Selvamany was more than just an educator.

Former student Datuk Seri Mohd Annuar Zaini remembers the late Selvamany as a caring mentor who always spoke with wisdom and was always by his side at challenging and difficult times.

"I even consider him as a second father to me," Annuar, who is Perak Economic Advisory Council chairman, told the New Straits Times today.

Selvamany, formerly of SMK Anderson in Ipoh, died this morning at the age of 93.

Annuar said he was aware that Selvamany had been ill for the past two years and was getting weaker.

"However I cannot escape feeling a tremendous loss not only for me, but for my family especially my wife and our two grown up children," he said.

Annuar recalls the former economics teacher as not only a teacher in the classroom, but also in his life.

"He injected life and soul in his lessons. For that he has produced outstanding students among them Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Gua Musang MP), Tun Ahmad Sarji (former chief secretary to the government), Tun Eousoff Chin (former Chief Justice), Tan Sri Salehuddin Mohamed (former chief secretary to the government), former Singapore Chief Justice Chan Sek Kiong, Tan Sri Wan Mohd Zahid Mohd Nordin (former Education director-general), Lieutenant General Tan Sri Mohd Yunus Mohd Tasi (former Royal Malaysian Air Force chief) and many others," Annuar remarked.

Remembering Selvamany as a man with a great heart, Annuar said the Batu Gajah born man had the heart of a saint.

"He will give encouragement and motivation. He was very humble and humbled himself when he went around to meet his successful students.

"He attended my wedding, and most of my wedding anniversaries when invited, until he got ill and was not able to travel.

"He was the first to speak to me on the phone upon hearing about my mother's death on Sept 24, 1997, and one of the earliest visitors to arrive at my house to pay his last respects. Similarly when I lost my father on June 4, 1998.

"I regret by the time my two children got married in 2016 and 2018, he was not in the position to travel to witness the two occasions.

"I am glad I had the opportunity to bring my son in law to visit him on the second day of Hari Raya in 2017. I am glad I had the chance to send him the last fruit basket this Deepavali," Annuar said.

As for the most historic moment they shared, Annuar said it was on Feb 3, 2009, when they were both conferred the Darjah Dato Seri Azlanii (DSA) which carried the title Dato' Seri by the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah.

According to Sekolah Idris Shah, Gopeng Alumni's Facebook page, the funeral for Selvamany will be held on Friday in Ipoh.

TO many, he is Datuk Seri N.S. Selvamany but to his former students, he is fondly known as sir, uncle or master.

Such was the closeness between this long-time teacher and his students whom he considered as his children.

Yeong Sek Yee, 72, described Selvamany as a helpful person, who was also passionate about causes, as he often stressed on national unity and equal treatment.

“He also went out of his way to help students who were in need.

“There was one poor student from Chemor who cycled to and from school.

“When master found out, he fought for the student to be placed at the school hostel so that he could have more time to study, ” he added.

Another former student, Yap Shek Seng, 72, said Selvamany once helped his late wife pay for her Form Six fees.
Selvamany, 93, the former teacher of SMK Anderson, Ipoh, and headmaster of SMK Idris Shah and SMK Seri Teja in Gopeng, passed away at his home in Persiaran Anderson, Ipoh last Tuesday.

During his funeral on Saturday, family and friends as well as students lined up along Persiaran Anderson to give him a final send-off.

Among those present were former Singapore Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, former Perak state speaker Datuk Seri SK Devamany, Gopeng Museum curator Phang See Kong and Datuk Mohammad Nor Khalid, famously known as Lat.

Lat, an old boy of SMK Anderson, said Selvamany’s memory was good as he remembered all of his students’ names.

“Usually students look for their teachers after completing their education, but with master, he looked for us.

“It was some time in 1971 when I was working as a journalist, and not known yet when he spotted me on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur. He called out to me and we spoke, ” said Lat, adding that Selvamany was a lovable teacher. Lat’s last meeting with his beloved teacher was at a school function last year.

Devamany said he met Selvamany through community work and has great respect for him.
“He was a great philanthropist, an inspiration for teachers everywhere. He was a man of harmony and managed to raise thousands of ‘children’ in prolific places, ” he recalled.

Former Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) chief executive officer Datuk Merlyn Kasimir, 71, said Selvamany was a father figure to him.

“I had transferred to Anderson from SMK Clifford to do my Form Six and it was a big adjustment for me, from a small town like Kuala Kangsar.

“He gave me a lot of advice on coping with studies, ” he said.

Hailing from Batu Gajah, Selvamany was also a former schoolmate and close friend of the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah.

Both of them studied at SMK Sultan Yussuf in Batu Gajah (formerly known as Government English School), that was started by Selvamany’s grandfather K. Malaiperumal Pillay.

He was named Tokoh Guru Perak and Tokoh Guru Kebangsaan in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah and Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim sent a wreath, expressing their condolences. In the condolence message, Sultan Nazrin wrote that the nation has lost a remarkable man who dedicated his life to the cause of better education for the nation.

”We are deeply saddened by the loss of Selvamany who was a dear friend to my late father, Sultan Azlan Shah, since their school days in Batu Gajah, ” he said.

Sultan Azlan Shah also launched a biography titled Selvamany: More Than A Teacher, written by Selvamany’s former student, Dr Rokiah Talib, in 2012.
